In a recent GPS World article, concern was raised over potential radio intereference that could impact "millions of users in large metropolitan areas." The FCC has been requested to allow a company named LightSquared to overlay the existing GPS signals by broadcasting in the L-band frequencies that are typically reserved for radio navigation satellite services (RNSS). The GNSS user community is being urged to contact the FCC and congressional representatives, and request that they reconsider the "fast-track" waiver proposal currently under review, and to not allow LightSquared to do its own testing and analysis to determine if their proposed transmissions will cause interference. Some in the GPS community are asking of the FCC, “What happened to independent, third-party, unbiased technical analysis for fact-based rule-making?" Details and contact information are available in the linked article.
