Multiple publications, including GPS World and Professional Surveyor
are advising that all in the surveying profession (as well as anyone else who's concerned about their GPS device working correctly) need to contact the FCC and their Congressional Representatives and voice concern about the LightSquared initiative. As of the recent ESRI Survey Summit in San Diego, LightSquared's wireless broadband project is proceeding as planned. The major concern about this project, as stated by Eric Gakstatter of GPS World, is that "If LightSquared's current proposal is approved by the FCC, it will render tens of thousands, and possibly hundreds of thousands of GPS receivers obsolete starting as early as next year." This could bring about a significant investment in new hardware for every surveyor or other professional who makes use of high-accuracy GPS equipment - an unwelcomed expense, especially considering current economic conditions.
So let your voice be heard! The Coalition to Save Our GPS website has lots of good information about the entire issue, as well as details on how and where to Voice Your Concerns. Note that the deadline for submitting public comments to the FCC is July 30th; this GPS World article contains specific instructions on how to submit your input directly to the FCC.
