In the midst of the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation on October 3rd, 1863, establishing a National Thanksgiving Day, to be celebrated on the final Thursday of November, 1863. He began with these words:
"The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God..."
Lincoln went on to describe the great abundance of this nation, even in spite of the waste and loss due to war, so in like manner, we should also make note of the great abundance that surrounds us, and offer our thanks accordingly. May all of our clients, friends, and families enjoy a bountiful and peaceful celebration of gratitude this Thanksgiving Day.
