The recent announcement by Trimble about their acquisition of Gatewing holds the promise for some interesting things to come in the world of surveying, in particular aerial mapping. Professional Surveyor Magazine's Pangaea article expands on this potential, noting that UAV technology may drastically reduce the cost per hour for services such as aerial monitoring of pipelines and utility transmission corridors. There remain various issues to be worked out, not the least of which is the safety of UAV technology, and their ability to "detect, sense, and avoid" collisions. But one way or the other, there seems little doubt that UAVs will impact the future of aerial imaging for the Surveying/GIS community.
