The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is using Juniper Systems handhelds to assist with removal of invasive fish species from the Green River. Native species are caught, recorded, tagged, and released, while the invasive species, which are destructive to the ecosystem by outcompeting native fish, are captured for later documentation. In a single day the crew caught 2800 fish along a 12-mile stretch of the river. The rugged Juniper handhelds replaced an older system whereby data was recorded on paper, then keyed into an Excel worksheet. Custom fisheries software now simplifies data collection for seasonal workers, while also reducing the chance of errors. Another side benefit -- the Juniper handhelds float!
