GPS World reports in this article that two Galileo satellits launched 08/22/14 by the European Space Agency are not in expected orbit. The liftoff and first part of the mission proceeded normally, with the planned orbit to be circular, but the satellites are now in an elliptical orbit.
In this more recent article with updated information, this statement is given: “Following the failure on Friday August 22nd to inject Galileo satellites 5 and 6 into the correct orbit, the European Commission has requested Arianespace and the European Space Agency (ESA) to provide full details of the incident, together with a schedule and an action plan to rectify the problem.” Behind the scenes, there is significant effort to determine what might have caused several million Euros of hardware to end up much lower above the Earth than desired. Position of the satellites is such that their eventual use as part of the Galileo constellation is very unlikely.
